Some had feared that crimes would be committed due to the involvement of money, which was common with the casinos of the time. Another concern from parents was that their kids would skip school to try to make some money. To make things worse for the industry, people argued that the materials the tables were made from would instead be put to more use if they were helping the war effort.
So what changed? In , a Manhattan court made the determination that these machines were games of skill, rather than chance. Pinball lovers the world over have Roger Sharpe to thank for that, who appeared as a star witness for the Amusement and Music Operators Association. In that courtroom, he called out his shots and, with surgical focus, proceeded to deliver his predicted targets as others looked on in awe.
