Nick was angry at Phyllis for berating the mother of his children, although it was evident that he still loved Sharon and was protective of her.
Nick and Sharon ended up meeting in Paris while Noah was on a school trip. Sharon had never been to Paris, so Nick gave her a tour of the entire city in one day. After their trip around the city, they stopped on a bridge overlooking the Eiffel Tower. Nick pulled Sharon in and the two kissed without knowing Phyllis was looking at them from across the waterway.
Sharon stopped the kiss and told Nick she would not be the other woman in the situation. Later, Nick offered Sharon her old job back at Newman Enterprises. In , there was a major snow storm in Genoa City. Sharon went to the Abbott cabin to have time for herself after the breakdown of her marriage to Jack.
Noah fell through thin ice up near the Abbott Cabin and Nick went to tell Sharon about what happened. The two ended up stuck in the cabin during the storm. When Nick found out that Sharon was still in love with him, through a letter she wrote but never intended on delivering , the two made love. While they were trapped, Brad Carlton ended up dying saving Noah from the ice. After making love, Nick and Sharon remembered old times and fantasized about what their life would've been like if Cassie had never died.
Nick and Sharon made it back to Genoa City and Phyllis instantly knew the two had been together during the storm. By April while looking for their son, Nick and Sharon ended up making love a second time at the cabin.
Phyllis knew what was going on and trashed Sharon's hotel suite, cutting up her lingerie. Phyllis begged Nick not to walk out on the marriage despite the second incident with Sharon. Sharon found out she was pregnant and told Nick he might be the father, however, Billy Abbott and Jack were also possibilities. Nick realized that he wanted Sharon and the life they shared years ago and he told Phyllis he was leaving her for Sharon.
Nick admitted that he had been in love with Sharon the entire time he was married to Phyllis and that Sharon is "the love of my life". Sharon and Nick reunited and began planning their new life together. Tests showed Nick was the father of Sharon's baby, however only Sharon knew the results. She was set to tell Nick, until tragedy lead Summer to be poisoned and near death. After seeing Nick in crisis, Sharon went to Jack and told him that he was the father and not Nick, so Summer would have Nick's full attention.
During her pregnancy, Sharon started suffering from kleptomania and committed herself to a psychiatric hospital for treatment. The truth about the baby's paternity came out during an argument between Sharon and Jack. Jack promised to keep the secret, but Nick overheard Sharon and Doris talking about it and wanted to be in the baby's life. Sharon became trapped in her room with Nick due to a patient's escape and explained why she hid their baby's true paternity from him. It was to help him focus on his daughter's recovery and help his family in crisis; to not stray when they needed him and not focus on her and their baby.
On September 30, , Sharon went into labor. Also in labor in the same mental hospital was Ashley Abbott. Months prior, while he was gas-lighting Ashley, Adam Newman accidentally killed her unborn child. Adam blackmailed a doctor to make Ashley think her baby girl was alive. Adam and the doctor went to see Ashley who was experiencing a hysterical pregnancy in the psych ward and found that she thought she was in labor.
He brought the doctor to Sharon's room and they stole her baby. Adam ordered the doctor to tell Sharon her baby was stillborn and that Sharon and Nick were advised not to see her. Adam then save Nick and Sharon's baby to Ashley. Sharon and Nick named their baby girl, Faith Cassidy Newman and grieved for what they thought was their loss.
Without knowledge of what Adam had done, Sharon started a relationship with him and eventually married him. On the way back from their impromptu wedding, the plane crashed.
Adam, thinking that he was going to die, showed Sharon a note that said her baby was alive, but Sharon hit her head and forgot about it. Nick and Phyllis started snooping and discovered that Adam blackmailed Ashley's doctor. Phyllis also found a note from the doctor explaining what happened to Ashley. Phyllis quickly put the pieces together and discovered that Adam kidnapped Faith and gave her to Ashley. After reuniting with Faith, Nick and Sharon grew even closer.
Nick and Phyllis broke up and got a divorce, leading him to reunite with Sharon. Sharon told Nick she wanted him to move back in with her. Nick said he would love to. Sharon and Nick moved his stuff into "their home," then took a break to remember Cassie. With Faith off to story time at the library with the nanny, Nick and Sharon decided to christen the house.
Sharon told Nick she knew he always loved her and she was happy with how things had worked out, but she thought they should wait so there was no question later that they did the right thing for the right reasons.
Undaunted by Sharon's reluctance to say she would marry him, Nick pulled out the engagement ring he gave her when they were engaged the first time. He said his heart had always been hers and he was so happy that fate brought them back together in Paris. Nick proposed to Sharon, and she accepted.
However, Sharon could not get Adam out of her head and slept with him in New Orleans. Nick left Sharon after she cheated. Nick and Sharon were apart for a couple of years and had various relationships with others. Eventually, Sharon loses custody of Faith to Nick, who won't accept her relationship with Adam. Sharon is arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Skye Lockhart Newman. She later skips town and poses under the identity 'Sheri Coleman' for months in New Mexico.
During this time, Genoa City believed her dead, leaving Nick devastated. The couple continued their affair and at one point were caught having sex by Phyllis'son Daniel. Soon after beginning her affair with Nick, Phyllis discovered that she was pregnant, and revealed this to Sharon after they were in a car accident.
Phyllis realized the possibility that her baby could belong to either Nick or Jack, because she was sleeping with both around the time she conceived. Jack was angry and excited, while Nick was extremely happy; eventually the DNA test showed that Nick was the father.
Upon learning that the baby was his Nick proposed to Phyllis and she accepted; However they ran into a snag with a law that stated that they could not marry until the baby was born.
Wanting to marry before the baby came, a heavily pregnant Phyllis and Nick headed to Texas and were married in a tavern by a Justice of the Peace. During the ice storm of Nick rescued Daniel and his then wife Lily from their car after they went off the road and crashed into a tree. Daniel was seriously hurt, but alive and was in the backseat with a scared Lily while Nick drove.
Meanwhile back at Newman Towers Phyllis and Jack became stranded in an elevator when the power went out due to the storm; then suddenly things get sticky when Phyllis goes into labor, and worse still that the baby is breech. Phyllis is terrified that she might loose her baby, but Jack keeps her clam, as she tells him to pull her baby out if something goes wrong.
Nick calls to check on Phyllis and is shocked to learn that her water broke in the elevator, he tells her to be tough and hang in there as he wants to see his little girl be born. Nick doesn't tell her about Daniel because he doesn't want to worry her. Jack coaches Phyllis through her labor and Summer Ann Newman is born in the elevator. The ambulance finally arrives and mother and baby are brought safely to the hospital, treated and released a few weeks later.
Shortly after welcoming Summer, the new family moves into the Tack House on the Newman Ranch, then make their marriage legal in Genoa City and marry in a ceremony at the church. During the reception Phyllis is arrested in front of everyone for a crime, but somehow she manages to avoid jail and go home. One day baby Summer becomes seriously ill when she comes down with a bacterial infection; however Michael is at the Tack House insisting that Phyllis turn herself in, but Phyllis won't leave her little girl, and with Daniel, Nick, Michael and Noah in tow the group heads to the ER.
Summer is immediately whisked away into the pediatric I. U, and suddenly the police show up with a warrant for Phyllis' arrest, but Michael tries to buy her time by telling the police that there are mitigating circumstances and the police show no sympathy and take Phyllis by force as she struggles unsuccessfully. Phyllis is taken to the police station to be booked on her charges, but she is more concerned about her baby girl than possible jail time and asks to use the phone so she can call her husband and check on her daughter who is very sick.
The officer is not very understanding and tells her that her daughter will understand and she just has to wait; however Phyllis tells the officer that nothing of the sort can happen because her daughter is just a little baby.
Nick stays with Summer at the hospital, and Vicki, Nikki, Michael, Daniel and the rest of the family visit as well to lend their support and check up on her. During their marriage Nick and Phyllis lived quite happily in the Tack House with Summer, and Sharon was getting into her own relationships with Adam, Jack etc. However it soon became clear that Sharon hadn't gotten over her feelings for Nick, and she began to get involved in their marriage, by always dropping by unannounced, telling Nick that she still loved him, and saying this to Phyllis also while trying to spend time with Summer Nick fends Sharon off and tells his wife that nothing is going on between them; however at one point Nick and Sharon have sex in the barn on the ranch, and Phyllis kicks Nick out for this offense, and files for divorce.
Two years later the pair reconcile and decide to renew their vows, but Sharon crashes their ceremony by declaring her love for Nick; however the wedding goes forward and Nick and Phyllis are married once again. Nick and Phyllis tried to enjoy their newfound bliss at home in their new recommitted relationship; however Sharon soon became a problem again, and the issues came to a head for Phyllis when Nick went on a business trip to Paris for his father's company.
While in Paris Sharon eventually pops up and begins hitting on Nick: telling him that she still loves him, that she wants him back, that she should never have let him go etc.
At first Nick resists her, but while they are on the bridge looking at the Eiffel Tower the two share a very romantic kiss, and worse still is that Phyllis sees this passionate exchange.
Upon returning to Genoa City Phyllis confronts Nick about what she saw in Paris, and after a heated argument a couple of days later Nick comes down with a packed bag and tries to sneak out of the house, but runs into Phyllis who is sitting in the kitchen.
